MUSIC
Back to Subjects MenuCurriculum Intent
Our curriculum is inclusive, absorbing, relevant, varied, progressive and respectful and aims to produce active and confident young people by giving them various opportunities required to reach their full potential in music. Students will develop related soft skills, outside of the obvious knowledge of performance, composition, and theory, including listening, communication, discipline, perseverance, creativity, literacy and numeracy, and emotional maturity. Our teaching will ensure that students develop their own performance skills and collaborate with others to create original performance material. They will be taught to develop compositions from scratch, helping them to develop their musical understanding and the quality of their musical experiences, whilst promoting good prospects for further study and a life-long appreciation for the art form.
Impact
Our Music curriculum will improve the quality of students’ musical responses and musical understanding to promote good prospects for further study and a life-long appreciation for the art form. Students will learn to scaffold practical musical skills from Year 7 to Year 11 in a sequenced and fundamentally musical way, by linking all musical activities to the act of making music. Our students will gain an understanding on the correct musical terminology eg, rhythm, melody, pitch, dynamics and are taught the skills to be able to compose using musical instruments. It is our aspiration that all students will be able to read and understand music notation. The department prides its curriculum on being inclusive, absorbing, relevant, varied, progressive and respectful – all of which will produce active and confident music students. Every student will be given the opportunity to share their musical skills at different events both in and outside school as part of our extra-curricular provision. It is our aim that each student becomes a confident performer.
